Short-Term Running Goals:

-Qualify for the 2024 Olympic marathon trials

Long-Term Running Goals:

-Run a few fast marathons. Grandma's, St. George, and Boston are on my target list. An Olympic Trials qualifier would be amazing.

-Break stroller records?

-Stay fit for a very long time. I believe what goes into making a competitive runner at age 60 is much different than age 20, just like what goes into making a good marathoner differs from a good sprinter. I hope that by taking care of my body, I can be very fast for my age as I get older.

Personal:

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I served a mission in Rome, Italy from 2015 to 2017. I eat a whole food, plant-based diet, which I believe helps my running. I like chocolate shakes on sunday nights and I will always call the Pacific northwest home.

My achilles has been feeling tight. I really should break out a new pair of shoes. 5:53 pace on east river road. It was really dark for a long time after I left at 7 am. I was really surprised to make it back in 5:47 pace, about a minute and a half faster than it took me to run out, because I was faced with an annoying (thats the level between inconsquential and brutal in the rankings I am creating as I write this) headwind and just felt tired and slow. I am guessing I made up most of it towards the end. I think even if I feel quick at the beginning of runs, its takes me a while to warm up to speed (for example, I made it to 18th in just 5:20, but got back from 18th in like 4:15 if I remember right, not even pushing it very hard). Just interesting. About 32 degrees. Got hazed eyes on the way back.

Boom island. 6:46 pace. Colder outside today, but it was plenty light because of daylight savings. I pulled out the new shoes to protect my tight achilles. There isn't much more than that that I can be doing (I'm also wearing my compression socks).

6:58 pace on farmers fields, when I was actually running. I got a piece of sand or something stuck in my eye on Como avenue and I spent like 5 minutes trying to get it out then more time running with my head cocked and eyes at a weird angle before stopping again multiple times and finally getting it out on Gortner avenue. Yikes!

Achilles felt better.

6:55 pace on west river road. A gorgeous cloudy, humid day of just under 60 degrees when I ran. I soaked up the last warm day of the year!

Como classic, first day of winter lol. Windy but I guess the cold made me run faster? 6:41 pace. That's very surprising but double checked and is accurate.

Not bad. On a quiet, cloudy morning that was cold but not super (29 degrees ish), I ran 5:46 pace past wheelock parkway, onto trout creek trail, and then running the first part of gateway trail. Wind was blowing south so this route was probably a lucky call, cuz it usually was mild since I was going almost always due east or west. I felt pretty fast for most of it. I was surprised to not really feel fatigued until the last couple miles. Overall, this route which I've done before felt a lot shorter today than it has in the past. 5:39 pace on the way back. This was a good day to be my last harder effort before I race on thanksgiving. One other note was that I felt kind of "hot" going out, and didn't think I'd be able to hold it. Its weird how my body really does adapt, since those beginning couple of miles were actually my slowest of the day, and yet they felt the hardest. I think it takes a bit for your aerobic engine to kick into gear.

Boom island. It was snowing a good amount, so I was surprised to be going 7:08 pace. I expected a lot slower. My alarm didn't go off so I felt really nice this morning.

Shorter run today because of the race next week. It was one of those days on west river where the snow and ice make it hard to get traction, so I only ran 6:34 pace.

Nice day for a pre meet as I had to wear a mask due to poor air quality. I'm not being sarcastic- I'm glad I only had to run 5 miles. Tried to run nice and slow, about 7:20 pace.

A kind of  chilly, damp morning to start out with but I didn't feel cold at all during the race wearing just my shorts, singlet, and gloves. Sunny and no wind. Crazy how a 10K seems like a quick race and one that hurts more in your lungs than your legs when your recent races have been further distances. The time was a bit dissapointing but not too bad. The 6.29 mile course according to mapmyrun put me at 5:04 pace or 31:29. Based on my rough experience with hills last time I was worried about today, but I guess with the pace I was going at, they were never a major issue. I really wanted the win for the money to buy new shoes. In addition to trainers, my vaporflies felt less springy today and should be replaced. The race strung out within a few hundred yards to being me and one other guy but he threw in a surge once we got to the top of the hill and I thought I was going to really have to work for the $100 difference between 2nd and 1st place. I passed him quickly at 1.25 miles or so, but at the 2.5 mile turnaround, he was lurking and kind of scaring me. At the next turnaround spot the gap increased, but I was still freaking out the last mile when we joined up with the 5Kers because every runner I heard in my periphery could have been him sneaking up for the win. Overall, it was a fun experience and kind of reminiscent of travel trips with the team as I flew here yesterday. I got like 2 hours of sleep last night but knew that wouldn't bother me too much for the race. My tummy was also topsy turvey while running. Nice to win my third race in three tries post-college, even given the level of competition. Not terrible for less than 3 months post surgery.

Beautiful drizzly morning on the W&OD. That trail has such a special place in my heart, which is weird because although I've been here five times over three years, I really haven't run there very many times total if you add it up. I felt faster than 7:09 pace but I think that happens after a race. Top of foot was sensitive again, so I did some exercises after.

Warm day to return to Minneapolis for an afternoon run after the flight, but my decision to run Resevoir woods was not the best given the melting snow. I actually took a different route home to avoid the muck. Didn't feel amazing- sore from the race, sore from the plane, foot still hurt, and felt hungry- but it was a nice day for a run. 6:39 pace.

Surprisingly 6:54 pace on west river road in the snow. Nice morning for a run. This fall has included a lot of days where my morning run by necessity has turned out to be almost as good as or even better than what I would have experienced in the afternoon- in this case, it would have been running at the tail end instead of the beginning of 5 inches of snow.

I am beginning a new plan to get rid of my old shoes, many of which are almost exhausted of mileage but not quite. I got 3 new pairs of Pegs today in the mail so it seemed like about time.

Just over 7 minute pace across the bridge to west river north. After 8 inches of snow I'm surprised I was able to run this morning.
